Real Salt Lake Deny LA

Real Salt Lake upset L.A. Galaxy 5-4 in a shootout to win the club’s first-ever MLS Cup title.

Even with an injured David Beckham, the pre-match supporters were expecting a picturesque scene of David Beckham and Landon Donovan parading the MLS cup to a confetti covered crowd; this however was not the case. Instead it was a joyful Real Salt Lake lifting the cup.

The highly contested game went to two extra time periods, ending in a penalty shoot-out. Exciting for the fans, but nervy times for the players as Robbie Russel put away the boys from LA with a seventh round penalty strike. The win for Salt Lake was made possible most notably by a DREADFUL Landon Donovan penalty which was sent sailing over the bar in a “Are you serious?” manner. Donovan, so disgusted with himself, ripped his captains arm-band off and threw it to the ground.

“It’s Russian roulette,” Beckham said of the penalties. “It’s not a nice way to go out. It’s just the way it is.”

At the end of the match, anyone watching had to had to say Real Salt Lake had out played the boys in white. Like the semifinal against Dallas, Real Salt Lake’s goal keeper Nick Rimando came up huge, producing two spectacular saves in the shootout.

The final was the second straight shootout for the Real Salt Lake players, after narrowly beating the Chicago Fire last weekend in a 5-4 penalty kick victory to clinch the Eastern Conference title.

“It’s nice to say we’re the best team in the league,” RSL coach Jason Kreis said. “… My honest opinion is we deserved to win that game.”

Dam…I wanted LA to win. Congrats to Real Salt Lake…! I thought it was a great hard fought game. I would have really like to see Landon Donovan make his penalty win the league and take off to Europe. I will be disgusted as a US soccer fan if our best player is still playing in the MLS next season. I believe that Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan are similar players, Dempsey has managed to put his stamp on the EPL and it's time for Donovan to join him. Anyways great year in MLS soccer, and cant wait to see what comes in 2010
