Jermaine Defoe to Barcelona?

Tottenhams Jermaine Defoe shootsWhile already boasting one of the best attacking forces on the planet, Barcelona seems to be pondering a bid for English goal scoring machine Jermaine Defoe. The Spurs striker has done nothing but impress this campaign, as he leads the Premier League in goals with eleven, including a shocking five goal display last week against Wigan. With Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola looking to sure up his attack in the January transfer window, reports say Barcelona are willing to pay £25 million for the in form striker.

Although there are few players who would deny an opportunity to play for one of the most decorated and popular soccer clubs in the world, Barcelona will have to deal with something completely out of their control in Defoe’s decision. With World Cup 2010 just around the corner, it is widely believed a move to Spain could increase his risk of failing to be named in the final squad.

Whether the deal ever goes through or not, it is hard to see one of England‘s top goal scoring talents being left home this summer. We will keep an eye on the situation and be sure to keep you updated.

This is silly stuff. Defoe is a good striker and definitely on form but he is not good enough for Barcelona. It also would be a step backwards for him if he is trying to make the England team. I can't see him being more than a sub and they already got a bunch of attacking talent.

This would be a great pick-up for Barca…I think it would be a great chance for Defoe, although he may have some extended bench time. It looks to me as if they are getting him for the depth of the team heading into major competition. It would great but you must look at it from the players point of view, espically with the World Cup looming. A player like Jermaine Defoe needs game time to show Fabio Capello that he has what it take to play at the international level. In Defoes defense, if you play for Barca it should grant national team privilage. Cant wait to see what happens, I'll keep reading. Great Post!
