It’s not often you see European club Presidents make an error of this magnitude. Shortly after being signed from Atletico Madrid, new striker Diego Forlan was named by Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti as part of the 25-man squad for the group stages of the Champions League. Unfortunately for Moratti and Inter fans around the world, Forlan had already played for Atletico in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League making him unavailable for Champions League group stage play.
Further complicating the problem, Forlan’s inclusion came at the expense of fellow striker Luc Castaignos meaning Inter will be short two strikers when they face Trabzonspor AŞ, LOSC Lille Métropole and PFC CSKA Moskva.
Responding to dissenting fans who are already unhappy about the loss of Samuel Eto’o this summer, Moratti said: “I’m sorry mostly for Castaignos because otherwise he could have played. The Forlan oversight is fairly serious and it’s not something we can fix, we have to find a way of avoiding it in the future.”
