Premier League Weekend Review

It was another landmark weekend in the English Premier League, with plenty of storylines to follow.  Let’s take a look at some of the big topics from this weekend’s action.

Game of the Week:  Manchester United vs Manchester City.  The headline game of the weekend didn’t disappoint; City steamrolled United, helped by Johnny Evans’ red card to open the second half.   Even the most faithful City fans couldn’t have predicted the 6-1 scoreline (United’s worst loss since the beginning of the Premier League, by the way, and at the hands of their city rivals-ouch.).  Mario Balotelli played a starring role, which is about the only prediction I got right in last week’s preview.  Will this be looked back on as the game that finally shifted the power from the Red to the Blue of Manchester?  Or will it be another false rising of the Blue Moon?

Goal of the Week:  Bryan Ruiz, Fulham.  Ruiz claims this week’s top honor with a great chip against Everton.  Unfortunately it was one of the only highlights of the game for Fulham, who lost 3-1 at home.  (Honorable mention to Royston Drenthe of Everton for his long-range goal in the same game, and to Yohan Cabaye of Newcastle for his late winner against Wigan).

Save of the Week:  Tim Krul, Newcastle United.  Krul’s save from Victor Moses’ powerful volley kept Newcastle in the game during a first half that was dominated by Wigan.

Surprise of the Week:  Newcastle United.  Who would have guessed the team that was relegated just three seasons ago would sit in third place, undefeated after 9 games?

Discussion Point:  Is Manchester City the real deal?  Last week we asked how they would handle the pressure of 1st place; if that was their answer on Sunday, then the rest of the league is in for a long year.  They’ve been dominant for 9 games…can they keep it up for 29 more?
