After 17 long years in the iconic Manchester United jersey, legendary midfielder Paul Scholes has decided to hang up his boots. While it probably wasn’t the way he imagined going out as a substitute in United’s 3-1 loss to Barcelona in Saturday’s Champions League Final, Scholes has none the less had an otherwise glittering career at Old Trafford.
After making his way through the Manchester United Academy, Scholes made his first team debut scoring a brace against Port Vale in 1994. As one of Fergie’s Fledglings, Scholes combined with other United greats Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and others as part of the treble winning side in 1999 which is seen as one of the best Manchester United teams ever.
While it was rumored that Sir Alex Ferguson would ask Scholes to stay on for one more year, the midfielders form dipped late in the season and he decided the time was right to call it quits. While ending one chapter of his soccer career as a professional player, Scholes will open another as he joins the United coaching staff.
