Donovan Stays Home, Also Running with Everton

LA Galaxy forward Landon DonovanLos Angeles Galaxy and U.S. Men’s National Team forward Landon Donovan has signed a new four-year contract which will keep him playing in the MLS, while making him the second highest paid player in the league.

The new contract was tailored similar to the David Beckham setup, where the player is allowed to pursue international playing opportunities by way of short-term loan agreement. Donovan will now complete a loan deal which will see him join English Premier League club Everton for the next few months.

Speaking on his chance to stay fit while playing with Everton, “I’m fortunate,” he said. “Most soccer players don’t get this opportunity to have the best of both worlds. It’s incredible.”

Perfect. I would have liked to see him step away from the MLS, since has already proved that he could dominate the league. But this is a great step in the right direction, Donovan has the pace and the skills to help Everton progress. This is also very good for the National Team, being that many of the US startes are now playing in England. Come the World Cup 2010 we should be more ready for England than we could ever be. This is a very big step up for Donovan, every USA fan should be happy for him and wish him the very best of luck.

I have been saying for a while that Landon needs to try the Premier League. A couple of lesser profile Americans have done well there and I think his game is made for The EPL. Everton are a good team with quality players that can help improve Landon and in turn help the national team.
