US Men’s National Team striker Charlie Davies has given his first interview since he was seriously injured in a deadly car accident six weeks ago.
The interview with ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap allowed us to get a better idea of how Davies’ mental and physical recovery is progressing. While Davies said he is expected to make a full recovery, he also said he has been hit hard by the emotional impact of the experience.
When asked about what it was like to survive a deadly car crash Davies explained, “I know I’ve become a lot more emotional since the accident…it’s definitely one of those things that really shakes you up and has me thinking at night a lot…It’s one of those things that I think eventually I’ll get over, but it’s definitely a difficult time and it’s a time that’s made me grow as a person.”
While Davies continues to fight the horrible memories of that night, doctors are very encouraged by his physical recovery and think Davies will be ready to suit up for the stars and stripes in South Africa. Since his release from a Washington D.C. hospital and subsequent move to a Deleware rehabilitation center, Davies has been making ‘fantastic’ strides towards getting back on the pitch according to his physical therapists. Joining Davies at the rehab center is US national team defender, Oguchi Onyewu, who is rehabbing the torn patella tendon he suffered in the U.S. team’s final World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica on Oct. 14.
The news of Davies’ speedy recovery comes as encouraging news for an American team who has lacked pace and creativity in attack since Davies has been out.

It would be amazing to see the USA #9 at the world cup. I am just happy to see that eventhough with a career threatening injury, Charlie is giving 100% to getting back on the pitch to represent the yanks. Good luck Charlie, and wish you the best on your recovery
I very happy to hear that his recovery is going well, for both the USA and for his sake. hahaha. I really hope he learns from his mistake, being a porfessional athlete is a huge privilage. He can really do big things for USA, being that he makes a full recovery. The speed that he contains cannot be taught, it's something your born. I'm crossing my fingers for him aswell as all the other USA fans. Goodluck Charlie!!
